All About Website Marketing

Wednesday, 26 March 2014 Leave a comment

If you read my last post, you already have a pretty fair understanding of search engine optimization (SEO). What then am I talking about when I call myself a “Website Marketing Specialist“? “What does website marketing even mean?”, you may wonder. In order to understand website marketing, you’ll need to know what internet marketing is as well.

Internet marketing is really any and all marketing related to the internet, online sales, online conversions, and online promotion. This even includes e-mail marketing and marketing on mobile devices. Internet marketing really refers to any marketing that’s done online, or sometimes it can be as broad as marketing done through any wireless media. Still, there are many specialists in the internet marketing industry who prefer to think of internet marketing in stricter terms than that.

Think of website marketing a piece of the internet marketing puzzle. Where internet marketing handles a wide variety of media, website marketing focuses on a specific website itself. When I manage a website marketing campaign, I understand that my focus is on getting user traffic to your website. Granted, much if not most of what I do is manipulating “off-page” SEO elements (SEO factors that increase ranking from outside the website). Still, the focus of website marketing is to increase traffic to your website, and increase your customer base.

When it comes to website marketing, I give every company I deal with the care and service that most businesses simply do not provide. If you’re in the Southern California area and are interested in what my company can do for your business, feel free to call or email me and I’ll be in touch. Don’t worry if your business doesn’t have a website, or if you are thinking of making changes to your existing website. My services cover all business models.

When Website Marketing Goes Wrong

Wednesday, 26 March 2014 Leave a comment

In an ideal world, website marketing would be so simple and easy that everyone would be able to be a master at website marketing. Unfortunately, we’re not in an ideal world, and website marketing is a tough business. More than that, there are too many companies that will try to scam you out of all your money (usually using black hat SEO techniques). I’ve seen these scammers before, and there’s usually a quick way to spot them. Here’s a few clues a website marketing company might be trying to scam you out of your hard-earned money (borrowed from Google and ProgressSEO):

1. Some Company You’ve Never Heard Of Sends You An Email Out Of The Blue

“Rule #1: Spammers lie. Rule #2: If a spammer seems to be telling the truth, see Rule #1.”
The Rules of Spam

This one I’ll give a little slack. Sometimes good website marketing companies will send out a mass email for their marketing campaign, and there’s bound to be some people receiving the email who might not have heard of the website marketing company (or maybe forgot that they had). But These SEO scammers go beyond that. If you read the content of the email, it will typically go something like this:

“Dear ABC Company,
I recently noticed that your website was not listed in any of the major search engines. You’re in luck because…”

It really doesn’t matter what else they say. The point is, if it sounds too good to be true, it’s because it probably is. Run, don’t walk, away from companies like this.

2. They Promise Or Guarantee You The #1 Spot In Google

“It is not the oath that makes us believe the man, but the man the oath.”

I’m sure you’ve heard it before. “We’ll get you to the first page, guaranteed!”. So many SEO companies have tried this scheme, and too many have gotten away with it. It’s been said many times before, but let me say it again for everyone who is listening. No website marketing company (or any company for that matter) can guarantee you any rank on any search engine. It’s simply not possible. Google themselves has made a statement about this.

3. They Offer To Sell You Backlinks

“Nothing is illegal if a hundred businessmen decide to do it.”
-Andrew Young

Purchasing backlinks is a sure-fire way to get you in trouble with Google. The problem with purchasing backlinks is that you don’t know where they are coming from. Usually, they’re coming from link farms (a very black hat SEO technique). Links like these can and usually are shut down, and suddenly your website is missing backlinks.

4. They Won’t Explain Clearly What It Is They Are Doing Or How They Are Doing It

“I hate deception, even where the imagination only is concerned.”
-George Washington

Many scammers (as well as some good-intentioned website marketing companies) will attempt to hide their website marketing strategies. Scammers will hide because they’re lying to you and not actually doing anything at all, but other website marketing companies will hide their methods because they are afraid of their “secret SEO formula” being discovered. However, you have nothing to gain from a website marketing company that can’t tell you what it is they’re doing for you.

At Brennan Mack SEO, I’m proud to be among the website marketing companies that doesn’t scam their clients, or resort to unethical SEO methods. If you’re in the Southern California area and are interested in what my company can do for your business, feel free to call or email me and I’ll be in touch. Don’t worry if your business doesn’t have a website, or if you are thinking of making changes to your existing website. My services cover all business models.

Website Marketing Ethics

So you have a business, and you’re learning how to establish a web presence using website marketing, right? Well, you’re in luck! This blog is dedicated to help business owners (and anyone else for that matter) learn and understand website marketing concepts that will help enhance website content, and most importantly, increase website traffic.

The first thing about website marketing that you have to understand is how important it is to always be white hat. “White Hat?”, you ask, “What the heck does that mean?” Well, this all started a while back, when website marketing was young. Many website marketers and SEO experts used the terms White Hat and Black Hat to refer to ethical and unethical website marketing practices, respectively. The term Black Hat comes from old Western movies, where the villain would often wear a black hat, in contrast to the hero’s white hat (which makes sense given that many of these movies were filmed in black and white).

In website marketing, black hat gets thrown around a lot to describe marketers who use unethical marketing techniques to advertise their website, or for SEO purposes. These are the sort of guys who you get spam email from. One black hat website marketing technique is link stuffing or link farming, where hundreds or thousands of links are put on a small page with no other content, just to get Google to notice them. Another black hat website marketing technique called cloaking allows black hat marketers to show a search engine different content than a person will see. It’s pretty clear why these black hat website marketers have such a negative reputation, and Google has been cracking down and removing sites that use these methods from their search results.

On the other end of the website marketing spectrum, white hat SEO may take a little more time, but it’s always better than the risk you take with black hat SEO, which is at times not only unethical, but illegal as well. At Brennan Mack SEO, I’m proud to let all of my clients know that all of my website marketing efforts are white hat, and I make sure not to risk my client’s sites getting deindexed. White hat will always beat black hat SEO in the long term, and good always defeats evil in the end.

What is SEO?

Wednesday, 14 September 2011 Leave a comment

How often do you have someone ask you, “What do you do for a living?” Pretty often, right? I seem to get asked this question all the time. But when I tell them, “I manage an SEO company”, more than half of the time they’re staring at me like a deer in headlights. So, in the interest of proliferating this knowledge to everyone reading this blog, I’ll answer the question on everyone’s mind: What is SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, which sounds like a mouthful, but really isn’t too complex. Let’s break it down, shall we? We all know what search engines are; how many people still haven’t heard of Google? Google, Yahoo!, and Bing take up over 95% of all internet searches. What about the “O” in SEO? What does Optimization refer to? What I’m optimizing is the ability for a website to rank high in a search engine for specific keywords or phrases. If you were to search Google for some product or service you’re interested in, you’re more likely to look at items on the first page, correct? Even more to the point, how much more likely are you going to click on the first link you see, versus say, the fifth?

SEO is a vital part of any marketing strategy, and one of the nice things about SEO is its versatility. SEO is beneficial for large and small businesses, for online businesses or businesses with a physical address. Even non-profit and community organizations have a lot to benefit from search engine optimization.

Say you have a website that you’d like to see appear high in Google for a certain keyword or phrase. I make sure that your website comes up high in Google rankings for that keyword, which means more people will come to your website. Each one of those visitors to your website is a potential customer. The more customers you have, the more sales you’ll make. As you can see, search engine optimization can be a powerful tool for businesses.

If you are interested in search engine optimization, or have a website or business that you believe could benefit from SEO, please contact Brennan Mack SEO and I’ll make sure that your website appears high in search results. Even if your business doesn’t currently have a website in place, or if you’re planning to overhaul or make changes to an old site, my services cover all business models.
