All About Website Marketing

Wednesday, 26 March 2014 Leave a comment

If you read my last post, you already have a pretty fair understanding of search engine optimization (SEO). What then am I talking about when I call myself a “Website Marketing Specialist“? “What does website marketing even mean?”, you may wonder. In order to understand website marketing, you’ll need to know what internet marketing is as well.

Internet marketing is really any and all marketing related to the internet, online sales, online conversions, and online promotion. This even includes e-mail marketing and marketing on mobile devices. Internet marketing really refers to any marketing that’s done online, or sometimes it can be as broad as marketing done through any wireless media. Still, there are many specialists in the internet marketing industry who prefer to think of internet marketing in stricter terms than that.

Think of website marketing a piece of the internet marketing puzzle. Where internet marketing handles a wide variety of media, website marketing focuses on a specific website itself. When I manage a website marketing campaign, I understand that my focus is on getting user traffic to your website. Granted, much if not most of what I do is manipulating “off-page” SEO elements (SEO factors that increase ranking from outside the website). Still, the focus of website marketing is to increase traffic to your website, and increase your customer base.

When it comes to website marketing, I give every company I deal with the care and service that most businesses simply do not provide. If you’re in the Southern California area and are interested in what my company can do for your business, feel free to call or email me and I’ll be in touch. Don’t worry if your business doesn’t have a website, or if you are thinking of making changes to your existing website. My services cover all business models.

When Website Marketing Goes Wrong

In an ideal world, website marketing would be so simple and easy that everyone would be able to be a master at website marketing. Unfortunately, we’re not in an ideal world, and website marketing is a tough business. More than that, there are too many companies that will try to scam you out of all your money (usually using black hat SEO techniques). I’ve seen these scammers before, and there’s usually a quick way to spot them. Here’s a few clues a website marketing company might be trying to scam you out of your hard-earned money (borrowed from Google and ProgressSEO):

1. Some Company You’ve Never Heard Of Sends You An Email Out Of The Blue

“Rule #1: Spammers lie. Rule #2: If a spammer seems to be telling the truth, see Rule #1.”
The Rules of Spam

This one I’ll give a little slack. Sometimes good website marketing companies will send out a mass email for their marketing campaign, and there’s bound to be some people receiving the email who might not have heard of the website marketing company (or maybe forgot that they had). But These SEO scammers go beyond that. If you read the content of the email, it will typically go something like this:

“Dear ABC Company,
I recently noticed that your website was not listed in any of the major search engines. You’re in luck because…”

It really doesn’t matter what else they say. The point is, if it sounds too good to be true, it’s because it probably is. Run, don’t walk, away from companies like this.

2. They Promise Or Guarantee You The #1 Spot In Google

“It is not the oath that makes us believe the man, but the man the oath.”
-Aeschylus

I’m sure you’ve heard it before. “We’ll get you to the first page, guaranteed!”. So many SEO companies have tried this scheme, and too many have gotten away with it. It’s been said many times before, but let me say it again for everyone who is listening. No website marketing company (or any company for that matter) can guarantee you any rank on any search engine. It’s simply not possible. Google themselves has made a statement about this.

3. They Offer To Sell You Backlinks

“Nothing is illegal if a hundred businessmen decide to do it.”
-Andrew Young

Purchasing backlinks is a sure-fire way to get you in trouble with Google. The problem with purchasing backlinks is that you don’t know where they are coming from. Usually, they’re coming from link farms (a very black hat SEO technique). Links like these can and usually are shut down, and suddenly your website is missing backlinks.

4. They Won’t Explain Clearly What It Is They Are Doing Or How They Are Doing It

“I hate deception, even where the imagination only is concerned.”
-George Washington

Many scammers (as well as some good-intentioned website marketing companies) will attempt to hide their website marketing strategies. Scammers will hide because they’re lying to you and not actually doing anything at all, but other website marketing companies will hide their methods because they are afraid of their “secret SEO formula” being discovered. However, you have nothing to gain from a website marketing company that can’t tell you what it is they’re doing for you.

At Brennan Mack SEO, I’m proud to be among the website marketing companies that doesn’t scam their clients, or resort to unethical SEO methods.
